The ancient Egyptian terms “jnr n wdh” and “ ‘t wdht”, which meant “stone of the kind that flows” was a reference to glass. Similarly the ancient Greeks used the term for glass “lithos chyte,” meaning “molten stone.” Akkadian and Sumerian languages had terms for lapis colored glass and lapis the jewel, Ugnu-kuri translated to “lapis lazuli from the kiln” (glass) and ugnu-sadi translated to “lapis lazuli from the mountain.”
